Alappuzha’s community effort cut mosquito breeding sites by 87% in two years
In Kerala’s Alappuzha, residents of Vadackal helped sharply reduce mosquito breeding sites by routinely checking homes and removing stagnant water. A study found breeding sites fell from 64.2 to 8.6 per 100 homes between 2016 and 2018.

When the monsoon arrives in Alappuzha, water can settle almost anywhere—canals swell, drains fill up, and small puddles linger even after the rain has stopped. The less noticeable spots can be the most risky: a flowerpot left outdoors, a discarded tyre near a wall, a bucket collecting rainwater, or a gutter that has not drained properly.
In Vadackal, a ward in Alappuzha, these everyday containers and corners had become convenient mosquito breeding sites. Researchers surveying the area in 2016 reported mosquito breeding sites in 64.2 out of every 100 homes they checked. In simple terms, on a street of ten houses, about six could have at least one spot where mosquitoes could breed.
Two years later, that picture looked markedly different. The same measure fell to 8.6 out of every 100 homes—an improvement that translates to an 87% reduction in identified breeding sites. The big shift was not only an external clean-up drive, but residents themselves starting to look for and act on breeding sources in and around their homes.
From awareness to routine action The initiative was part of a study led by researchers from the ICMR–National Institute of Virology’s Kerala unit and TD Medical College, Alappuzha, conducted between November 2016 and October 2018.
The study asked a practical question: in a district that sees diseases such as dengue, chikungunya, and leptospirosis with seasonal regularity, can residents—if organised and supported—achieve results that routine vector-control efforts often struggle to sustain?
Before encouraging any behavioural changes, the researchers focused on understanding the local reality. They looked at where water was collecting, what families already knew about dengue and prevention, and which public-health messages were reaching households effectively.
This groundwork mattered because mosquito breeding is frequently tied to normal household routines rather than major sanitation failures. A small amount of standing water can be enough. Once residents began identifying these sites themselves, prevention moved from being an occasional campaign to a repeated habit.
Residents as “home inspectors” for breeding sites The most constructive takeaway from Vadackal is the idea of residents becoming their own inspectors.
Instead of depending solely on periodic visits or one-time drives, households started checking their surroundings and speaking with neighbours—spotting containers that held water, noticing blocked drainage, and addressing small issues before they became larger problems.
Such community-led checking is simple, but it works because it targets the precise locations where mosquitoes often breed: items left outside, stored water, and corners that are easy to ignore in day-to-day life.
